Dal Lake | Map, Location and Key Facts
Dal Lake is a freshwater lake located in Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir), often called the “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir”. It is one of the most famous lakes in India, known for houseboats, floating gardens, and shikara rides.
Location & Physical Features of Dal Lake
Dal Lake lies in the Kashmir Valley within the Himalayan region, surrounded by the Zabarwan hills and influenced by the Pir Panjal range.
- Location: Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir
- Elevation: ~1,583 metres
- Area: ~18 sq. km.
- Type: Freshwater lake (urban lake system)
During winter, the temperature may drop to −11°C, and the lake may partially freeze.
Rivers & Water System
Dal Lake is mainly fed by small streams and channels linked to the Jhelum River system.
- Inflow: Telbal Nallah (main feeder)
- Outflow: Connected to the Jhelum River
Basin Structure (Important)
The lake is divided into four basins by causeways:
- Gagribal
- Lokut Dal
- Bod Dal
- Nagin Lake (sometimes treated as separate)

Mughal Gardens & Surroundings
The lake is bordered by Mughal-era gardens:
- Nishat Bagh – “Garden of Joy”
- Shalimar Bagh – Built by Jahangir (“Abode of Love”)
- Chashma Shahi – Known for natural spring
These gardens were built during the Mughal period and add cultural value to the lake.
Dal Lake is not designated as a Ramsar wetland or protected area, but it remains an important urban freshwater ecosystem in the Kashmir Valley.
